Gov. Jim Risch has an interesting explanation for the partisan divide in Idaho. He blames his hunting trips with Kermit Kiebert.
Kiebert, a Democrat, and Risch, a Republican, have been friends for more than 30 years. The two are former legislative colleagues who over the years have hunted together near Kiebert’s north Idaho home.
“I’ve been lost more times in Bonner County than anywhere else in Idaho,” the governor said.
Risch told a story he called “The Dismal Swamp Caper.” He and Kiebert had killed an elk, which had fallen in an awkward spot on a steep slope. They had to move the carcass, so Kiebert stepped to the uphill side while Risch stayed on the downhill.
“The last thing I remember hearing,” Risch said, “was ‘Just hold it right there, I’m going to move the front end a little bit.’”
