Rob Cronin, a real estate agent in Ketchum, recently received the Good Neighbor Award from Realtor Magazine for his work with children who have cancer.
Cronin’s award includes a $10,000 grant to Camp Rainbow Gold, the entity he has helped for the last seven years. The American Cancer Society-run outdoor summer camp will use the money to help purchase its own campsite and operate year-round, Cronin said. The money could also help expand the camp’s programs to children with other disabilities, he said.
Cronin has worked as a counselor, board member, fundraiser, camp director and activities director with Camp Rainbow Gold. He helped raise $1.4 million for the camp in two years, and has volunteered there for nearly 2,000 hours.
He got involved because of his own experiences with cancer. In 1997 Cronin was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue and throat. He was treated with surgery and radiation and has been cancer-free since October 1997.
Cronin said his most spectacular memory at Camp Rainbow Gold was of a boy from Boise named Andrew Collins, who died three years ago.
The camp raffled off a Harley-Davidson as a fundraiser, and Cronin bought Collins a ticket. He won.
“He was blown away,” Cronin said. “We ended up getting the motorcycle to him five days before he died. I got to give him a ride on it. He willed it to his mother so she would be able to sell it to pay for his medical bills.”
About 75 kids come to Camp Rainbow Gold every year, Cronin said.
Cronin, who works for Coldwell Banker Conklin & Co., was one of five national recipients of the Good Neighbor Award.
