An alliance of business development agencies met Wednesday for the first in a series of orientation meetings at the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce.

Ben Quintana, director of the Small Business Success Center, said the meeting was intended as a one-stop opportunity for entrepreneurs and small business owners to become familiar with the resources available in the community.

Representatives from 15 agencies discussed the services and resources their respective agencies offered. Participants included:

• Small Business Success Center
• Boise Valley Economic Partnership
• Boise Public Library
• U.S. Small Business Administration
• Idaho Commerce & Labor
• Idaho Procurement Technical Assistance Center
• Idaho TechConnect
• Kickstand
• MicroEnterprise Training & Assistance
• National Association of Women Business Owners
• Sage Community Resources
• SCORE Counselors to America’s Small Business
• Idaho Small Business Development Center
• TechHelp
• U.S. Department of Commerce
Shane Sawyer, director of business development at Ascensio, said the meeting was very helpful.
Ascensio is a database management company; Sawyer said meeting the different agencies introduced him to new opportunities to secure clients and customers.
“There’s a real opportunity to help the Department of Defense,” Sawyer said. “I had no idea there were resources like [that] available.”
The state’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center helps Idaho-based companies secure contracts with government agencies, primarily the Department of Defense.
Tami Martin, who opened her own consulting business in March, said the first orientation meeting was very good. “There are a lot of resources I didn’t know about,” she said. “A lot of no-cost resources available to businesses.”
The Small Business Success Center will continue to meet once a month for presentations and networking until the end of the year. There is no cost to attend, but registration is recommended. For more information on upcoming meetings, go to www.boisechamber.org.

I’m flying to upstate New York for my college reunion next week, and I’m stockpiling work and reading matter on my Kindle. With stops in Minneapolis and Atlanta, it’s going to take me 13 hours to get there. But that’s the way it is to fly from Boise these days. Direct flights are scarce, especially [...]

Most business owners like the idea of being self-employed and, therefore, the “master of the universe.” But the downside of that dominion is that sometimes the business and/or its owner(s) may be liable in damages for its employees’ conduct even when it doesn’t occur directly “on the job” or with the business owner’s knowledge and [...]
