Washington Group International said it has been selected by a Chinese nuclear venture to provide management consulting services. Nuclear Power Qinshan Joint Venture Co. Ltd. tabbed the Boise-based engineering and construction company to provide project management consulting services related to its nuclear power activities in China. Nuclear Power Qinshan owns and operates two commercial, 650-megawatt pressurized water reactors in Zhejiang Province, China. It is building two additional 650-megawatt units at the same site.

As China embraces nuclear technologies to bridge a gap in power-generation needs, Washington Group will support Nuclear Power Qinshan’s efforts to evaluate and improve its nuclear activities, Lou Pardi, president of the Power business unit of Washington Group, said in a statement. Washington Group has been working with nuclear technologies for more than 40 years.

Financial details weren’t released.

Washington Group said in the statement that it will evaluate Nuclear Power Qinshan’s project management process and project execution procedures, develop benchmarks and evaluate areas that could enhance project performance. Washington Group also will host a Nuclear Power Qinshan technical team at its Princeton, N.J., office, providing consulting and advisory services on a variety of engineering and technical issues.

With growing energy demands in the world, nuclear power is being looked to as a key source of dependable, efficient, clean energy because it does not produce greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change, the Washington Group statement said.
