Forest products leading to layoffs (access required)

  • Boise Cascade says it plans to lay off 30 workers at an Island City particleboard plant and curtail a shift at its La Grande sawmill, KBOI reported this morning.

The company cited a distressed pine lumber market for the cutbacks. Boise Cascade, according to the Associated Press. Officials say it tried to avoid the layoffs because of the impact on a small community but the market downturn was too steep.

Boise Cascade has no plans for curtailments at its other manufacturing plants in Elgin or in Kettle Falls, Washington.

 

  • Lee Enterprises is combining two Idaho dailies, The Times-News in Twin Falls and the South Idaho Press in Burley plus three weeklies into a single daily that will be called The Times-News, according to a national trade publication.

The combined paper will launch Aug. 18.

With the merger, announced by Times-News Publisher Brad Hurd, 14 employees will be laid off. The merged paper and its Web site will employ a staff of 109, Hurd added.
