Elaine Ladd is trained and experienced in the pharmaceutical trade; her husband Kip has sharp business management skills. Working as a team, the couple launched Ladd Family Pharmacy at 1109 S. Broadway Ave. next to KeyBank. The grand opening was Aug. 2.

The pharmacy offers a family-oriented environment with play space for children and a massage chair for older people. As Elaine Ladd puts it: “It’s kid-friendly and comfortable for the elderly.”
The pharmacy also offers a variety of services others don’t, including health and wellness consultations, upcoming yoga and palates classes and customized compounding of medications – one of only two facilities in the area to offer that service.
Elaine Ladd explained the compounding is useful for customers in several ways; patients unable to swallow pills can receive medications in liquid form, or even as gummy bears or transdermal patches. Athletes and others who need pain relief can, through compounding, get medications changed to a substance that can be rubbed onto the injured area.
Along with full-time pharmacy work, Ladd works as a consultation pharmacist with Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, is an Idaho State University pharmacy faculty member and volunteers as a pharmacist at the Garden City Community Center. At the center she informs people – particularly adults and children with diabetes – about managing their illness and preventative medication as well as lifestyle modifications that help alleviate symptoms.
“Education is powerful,” she said. She provides the same service at Ladd Family Pharmacy in a private room for individualized consultations.
She works closely with physicians in a collaborative effort to help patients better manage their illness. She calls what she does “an extension of the [doctors’] work.”
Like other small pharmacies in the area, Ladd Family Pharmacy offers delivery of medications and is working with North Star Courier, a “completely green” bicycle delivery service.
Also planned are ongoing, onsite health fairs.
Kip Ladd said the couple financed their new business with a home equity loan from KeyBank and a business line of credit from Idaho Banking Company. They leased space for the pharmacy through KeyBank Real Estate, which is based in Denver, Colo.
He said the couple has set an “ideal goal” of reaching “$3 million in three years.” Meanwhile, he continues to work full time for Hewlett-Packard in its Web marketing department.
The pharmacy currently employs three full-time pharmacists (including Elaine), two part-time pharmacists, two full-time technicians and four part-time technicians. Many of the employees – including Elaine – previously worked at the Broadway Avenue-located Hill’s Valu-Right Pharmacy, which recently closed.

The Affordable Care Act (the “Act”) and its companion legislation have received significant attention since they were signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010.  The fate of the Act now rests in the hands of the United States Supreme Court.  Commentators expect the court to hand down a decision in June. You’ve done everything right. You’ve adopted the concept of “perpetuity” so that the firm now thinks and plans for the long term. You’ve groomed a solid core of good leaders who are trusted, share common values, are committed to the firm’s long-term success and are at least two generations deep. You’ve gradually expanded ownership of [...]
