A bridge collapse along Interstate 84 sent 14 workers to the hospital Monday.

None of the workers, who are with Spokane, Wash.-based Graham Construction and Management, suffered life-threatening injuries and are being treated at Mercy Medical Center in Nampa, and Saint Alphonsus and St. Luke’s in Boise, according to press reports.

It was immediately unclear what caused the collapse, or the severity of the damage. The bridge was intended to replace the Robinson Boulevard Overpass and was part of a larger I-84 widening project that included the demolition and replacement of the Black Cat Road Overpass a few miles to the east.

Using a new construction process called “self-propelled modular transport,” workers have been assembling the replacement bridges at roadside staging areas where the collapse reportedly took place.

Idaho Transportation Department officials said earlier that the modular transport process had expedited the widening project by up to 10 months, but it was immediately unclear how Monday’s collapse would affect the timetable.

Columns had already been raised to support the Robinson Boulevard Bridge Oct. 24 and crews were planning to raise identical columns at Black Cat Road at10:30 p.m. Oct. 27. ITD said it would postpone bridge work until an investigation into the collapse could be conducted.

ITD officials said they would release a statement on the incident and it was reported that a representative from Graham Construction and Management would be flying down from Spokane to address the situation.
