With the growl of a huge earthmover, Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter moved a huge shovel of dirt, as the newest construction project on the I-84 corridor gets under way.

The Ten Mile Interchange at the southeast corner of the existing Ten Mile overpass is being touted as a huge link in the Meridian tie over the freeway.

The interchange, which is designed like a huge "X" is scheduled to be completed in early summer 2011 and it's going to be the first new exit on Interstate 84 since the Karcher Interchange opened in 2006. Four lanes of traffic criss-cross the freeway, accompanied by sidewalks and bicycle lanes, and it's all to be monitored by a single traffic signal.

It's a modern mechanism that will lighten the load on the Meridian off-ramp and propel the commerce in that region as shopping, office and business spring up around it. ITD says this is one more move forward to opening the flow of traffic at peak usage.

With the growl of a earthmover, more sprawl is headed West.
