M2M Communications & Rocky Mountain Power win award 

Boise-based M2M Communications, a leading supplier of web-to-wireless monitoring and control solutions, has received the prestigious M2M Magazine Value Chain Gold Award for its ongoing project with Rocky Mountain Power. The M2M industry has expanded from a niche technology to a far-reaching market with thousands of applications.

Rocky Mountain Power is a division of PacifiCorp, a regulated electricity company serving approximately 1.7 million retail customers in Oregon, Washington, California, Utah, Wyoming and Idaho. During the past 3 years M2M has worked closely with Rocky Mountain Power to deploy over 4,000 specialized load control units in southeast Idaho and Utah.  The Irrigation Load Control Program provides an efficient balance of electrical power supply and demand between agricultural and residential customers.

 “With the increased energy demands of consumers we needed a reliable solution that will allow us to remotely manage the energy load,” said Bill Marek, project manager of Rocky Mountain Power. “By working with M2M Communications we were able to provide a solution that exceeded our stringent requirements.”

The M2M Communications Lodestar load control solution, with two-way web-to-wireless capabilities, has provided the utility with a secure and reliable method to remotely monitor and control energy usage at irrigation pump sites. 

Steve Hodges, president of M2M Communications accepted the award, “By working closely with our customer, we were able to develop an optimized product and program.  The Lodestar has provided real benefits for both the utility and the grower.” 

As much as one third of the total summertime power consumption in Idaho is devoted to irrigation. The Lodestar system will reduce summer peak usage by Rocky Mountain customers by more than 300 megawatts in 2009.
