Telemetric Corp., a Boise technology company that provides distribution automation technology to utilities, has a new owner. Sensus, of Raleigh, N.C., has acquired Telemetric’s assets and business.

Sensus is active in demand response and home automation. Acquiring Telemetric gives Sensus “a significant and established presence in the distribution automation portion of the utility landscape,” Sensus said in a release. Telemetric will integrate Sensus smart-grid communication technology and extend Sensus’ reach and solutions to all parts of the smart grid.

“This acquisition brings with it a team of talented and dedicated employees, a broad proven product and software offering, and many strong customer and business relationships,” Sensus CEO and President Peter Mainz said. “Integration of Telemetric’s assets and engineering capability into Sensus brings a key solution set that electric utilities want from their Smart Grid applications, distribution automation and asset-management solutions.”

Telemetric offers a complete line of intelligent communication solutions specific to electric distribution system monitoring and control. These include applications such as capacitor control, voltage regulation, medium- and low-voltage sensors, reclosers, remote substations and other distribution assets. Telemetric enabled equipment can be monitored and controlled remotely.

“We believe that this combination will offer customers an unprecedented range of distribution automation and asset management solutions,” Telemetric CEO Tom Loutzenheiser said. “By offering Telemetric’s products with the power and flexibility of Sensus’ FlexNet communications or digital cellular networks, Sensus will provide utilities powerful, proven Smart Grid solutions. The additional resource and worldwide reach of Sensus will help us accelerate growth.”

In an interview, he said Sensus is known worldwide as a leader in advanced metering for electric, water and gas utilities.

Telemetric, which has been in business for about a decade and employs 29 in Boise, will become part of Sensus’ Conservation Solutions business unit. The unit provides automated metering infrastructure and smart-grid solutions to electric, water and gas utilities. Loutzenheiser is now vice president of distribution and automation for Sensus Conservation Solutions, which he said has been growing consistently in recent years.

Telemetric already had been working on new products under an alliance with Sensus announced earlier this year.

“We plan to invest further resources in developing additional products to meet customer needs,” Loutzenheiser said. “There is a commitment to Boise, Idaho – all the talented people we have here – and I think we will continue to grow prudently. There is a lot of opportunity to provide smart grid applications to the electric utility marketplace.”

Financial details were not released.

Loutzenheiser said Akers Capital, Highway 12 Ventures and Telemetric’s other investors from the community supported the company over the years.
