A new technology that makes mobile business transactions more secure is being tested at Brigham Young University-Idaho.
The “open-encryption platform”, developed at the Idaho National Laboratory and licensed to Idaho Falls-based RFinity, uses a secure microSD card with a contactless interface designed by international security technology firm Giesecke & Devriet.
Integrating RFinity’s platform with G&D’s chip will make the world’s most reliable and secure identification and transaction system for use with mobile phones, according to a news release. The open-encryption platform was honored this year by R&D Magazine in its R&D 100 list of “technologically significant products.”
Students and faculty at BYU-Idaho began using the integrated system Sept. 4 to make purchases at the university’s bookstore from their mobile phones.
“We hope RFinity and G&D have a successful pilot with us, and we’re anxious to see what benefits their new technology could potentially provide to our university,” stated BYU-Idaho spokesman Andy Cargal.
RFinity officials hope the pilot will lay the foundation for third-party developers to extend the company’s technology into a wide variety of industries. The card, developed by G&D, can be used in mobile phones, smart phones, netbooks and other mobile devices, including USB security tokens.
“Today’s mobile phones are not only used for communication, but also for information, navigation and entertainment. The next logical step is to turn it into an electronic purse,” stated Dr. Kai Grassie, head of the New Business division at G&D. “RFinity’s platform and G&D’s Mobile Security Card provide a secure environment that is the condition for trustworthy mobile payment transactions.”
