Idaho came in with the largest increase of the 16 states that added construction jobs between July and August this year.

According to a press release from the Associated General Contractors of America, Idaho added 1,000 jobs in August, bringing the state’s total construction employment to a seasonally adjusted rate of 39,000. That’s a 3.2 percent increase.

Idaho AGC Executive Director Mark Dunham said the increase comes from federal stimulus spending, but he doesn’t think the increase in jobs is here to stay.

“Unfortunately, this is a one-time infusion of revenue that will end with these projects,” he said in an e-mail. “The legislature's failure to realistically address the well-documented and ‘studied-to-death’ crisis in Idaho's transportation funding means this positive news may be temporary.”

Total construction employment in August was still 12.4 percent below last year’s level.

Just two states, North Dakota and Louisiana, saw year-over-year increases. The remaining 49 states and the District of Columbia showed decreases of between 2.4 percent and 26.8 percent.

Idaho was ranked 15th for year-over-year performance.
