Energy Resources announces grants to municipalities

The Idaho Office of Energy Resources on March 8 announced the award of second-phase Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program funds to 17 municipal entities.
The program, a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, aims to increase energy efficiency, spur economic growth and job creation, and encourage deployment of renewable energy for eligible cities and counties, the office said in a release.
The Office of Energy Resources received 23 grant requests for more than $5 million combined, awarding 11. Sub-grants ranged from $39,287 for a single city, Ucon, to $979,014 for a Parma-led partnership of seven cities. The Idaho Association of Counties and the Association of Idaho Cities assisted.
Activities approved for funding included methane capture and reduction projects as well as renewable energy creation for government buildings, the Office of Energy Resources said.
“During this time of economic strife, funding for these projects will help many Idaho communities take positive steps toward controlling the way they consume energy,” Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter said. “The money these communities save will have a lasting and positive financial benefit for decades to come.”
The Office of Energy Resources issued a request for proposals Dec. 21 and received applications until Jan. 22. An independent committee evaluated and ranked the proposals. Committee members included people with expertise in city and county operation, job creation, grant administration and energy policy.
Recipients included: Blaine County, $93,168; Blackfoot, $86,960; Bonners Ferry, $74,620; Driggs; $219,960; City of Franklin, $182,162; Hailey, $234,000; Oakley, $67,120; Parma (seven entities), $979,014; Sandpoint, $65,000; Ucon, $39,287, Victor, $164,938.
