How ‘sticky’ is the Boise Valley?

Consider which of the following statements are true about the Boise Valley: a) many technology companies can’t seem to find enough local talent to hire; b) an aging workforce in multiple industries is projected to leave a shortage of talent in the coming years; c) arts, nonprofit, charitable, service and civic organizations are scrambling to develop their next-generation leaders, donors and volunteers; or d) the lack of high-paying jobs has discouraged talent from moving to and staying in the area.
The answer, regrettably, is all of the above.
I’ve noticed an ongoing theme emerge over the past few months. Presentations at BYP, City Club of Boise, University of Idaho-Boise, and the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce all addressed the need to attract and retain talent.
If the Boise Valley is to compete in today’s rapidly changing business environment, then it must seek, develop, and keep the best and brightest people. So the question becomes: What makes the Boise Valley a great place for the next generation and how is Boise Young Professionals (BYP) creating impact?
In March of this year, BYP held an event, “Why Should Young Professionals Stay in Idaho?” which featured a discussion with Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter and more than 150 young professionals. The crowd was honored to have the governor in attendance, but many people were disappointed with the message they received. Many left wondering if the state’s top leader really had a compelling answer to the event’s main question. On May 20, the group plans to pose a similar question to Boise’s Mayor David H. Bieter.
On April 15, 2010, the City Club of Boise and the University of Idaho-Boise each held an event which highlighted the same concerns. Nancy Napier, BSU College of Business and Economics, and Bob Lokken, CEO, WhiteCloud Analytics, discussed “Creative Economy Redux – Is Boise Losing Steam?”
They focused on the declining population of talent between 30-45 years of age and what its impact will be on the Boise Valley. Later that day at the University of Idaho’s Boise campus, Rod Stevens, principal of Spinnaker Strategies, presented the topic “Sticky Places: Using Place-Making to Attract Money and Talent.” Again, the theme of attracting and retaining talent was highlighted as a key driver in economic development.
During the Boise Metro Chamber’s Regional Leadership Conference this April, speakers from Micron Technology, Balihoo, Inovus Solar, Clearwater Analytics, and Biomark, Inc. all mentioned the importance of attracting and retaining talent to fuel their companies. Some of these companies have even had difficulties filling jobs for key positions due to a lack of available talent – despite record-high unemployment in a down economy.
BYP’s mission is to attract, develop and retain a talented workforce in the Boise Valley by connecting, empowering and engaging young professionals. It is our belief that if we connect young professionals through business and social networking opportunities, empower them through community education, and engage them in community and civic involvement opportunities, the region will become a more “sticky” place by retaining talent.
To learn how BYP can help address these gaps, our organization has commissioned Next Generation Consulting (NGC), an independent third-party market research and consulting firm, to administer a Next Leaders Survey. The survey takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete and measures the impact that young professionals are having on our community. Moreover, it also seeks to identify and prioritize the issues and amenities that matter most to the next generation.

‘Sticky’ as in “I’m stuck in this cold, isolated place and canot sell my house to get out?” especially since Boise scored a number #10 in Business Insider’s recent “The 13 housing markets that will never recover”.

Thanks to Obama, STRATEGIC DEFAULT is the answer for many homeowners. Who cares that the Banks received Millions if not Billions of dollars via TARP and got into bed nice and cozy with the GOV only to continue to SHAFT mainstreet American homeowners.

Many talented employees are leaving the area due to the depressed pay they are offered throughout the valley. My wife is in NP (Nurse Practitioner) school and recently discovered that pay for newly graduated NP’s in the valley was in some cases half of what it is on the coast. With this kind of discrepency in pay rates it is not surprising that many talented employees choose to leave. It is not all about the money but with what is being offered out there today the discrepency is apparent.
