Learning from the past to enhance the future

In last month’s column, “How ‘sticky’ is the Boise Valley?” Ben Quintana discussed the Next Leaders Survey that was recently commissioned by the Boise Young Professionals. Its purpose is to assist our organization with determining how we’re progressing toward achieving our mission to attract, develop and retain a talented workforce in the Boise Valley by connecting, empowering and engaging young professionals. The resulting report will be published next month, and a high-level summary will be provided in our July column.

BYP commissioned a similar survey in 2008. In preparation for results from the 2010 survey, it’s useful to reexamine some of the findings from the prior survey so a comparison of the subsequent two years can be achieved.

The 2008 survey had 359 respondents, of which 56 percent were BYP members. They were well-educated (83 percent had at least a four-year degree), mobile (65 percent didn’t have children) and civic-minded (94 percent were registered voters; 75 percent voted in the previous election). They work in a variety of sectors, with the top three being finance and insurance (17 percent), professional, scientific and technical services (14 percent), and public administration (11 percent).

The majority (59 percent) consisted of “transplants,” followed by “lifers,” (22 percent), and “boomerangers” (raised in Idaho, left and moved back, 19 percent).

Also, more than half (72 percent) own homes. Overall, respondents had a “very positive” perception of Boise’s quality of life (62 percent). Thus, it comes as no surprise that approximately half (51 percent) reported their intention to remain in the area for at least 10 years.

Respondents were asked to provide percentage ratings for two questions on seven community indexes: (1) “How important are these amenities to you (Value)?” and (2) “How well does Boise provide these amenities (Perception)?”

Only the first two indices will be discussed in this column. The “cost of lifestyle” index examined the statement, “I want a community where I can afford to live, work, and play.” They reported a value of 99 percent, with their perception that Boise achieved it at 76 percent.

The “earning” index assessed the statement, “I want a broad choice of places to work and an environment that is friendly to entrepreneurs.” They reported a value of 97 percent, with their perception of Boise achieving it at 57 percent. It should be noted that this low percentage was reported several months in advance of the precipitous economic downturn of 2008.

What can be derived from these results? First, our membership consists of the type of educated and talented individuals needed to grow successful businesses in this area. Second, although relatively young in age, they already have sunk roots in the community with the intention of remaining for the long-term. Third, they were already disappointed in the availability of career opportunities with attractive earning potential before the instability caused by the current recession.

So what is the way forward? For our part, BYP will continue to seek out every opportunity to develop strategic partnerships that will foster an environment where young professionals can thrive. For instance, it was recently announced that select members of our organization will comprise a young professional advisory committee for Mayor Bieter. Also, we’re looking forward to participating in the “The Starfish Initiative” that was recently conceptualized by Bob Lokken and Nancy Napier.

Ultimately, we want to be instrumental in helping this area to attain a deep talent pool. This will allow startups to meet their growth needs, attract businesses to the area that will provide sustainable, high-paying jobs, and make Boise an “it” place where young professionals want to live.

The Affordable Care Act (the “Act”) and its companion legislation have received significant attention since they were signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010.  The fate of the Act now rests in the hands of the United States Supreme Court.  Commentators expect the court to hand down a decision in June.
