A new report from the Idaho Department of Labor shows that the state’s job vacancy rate remains low and only one in five open jobs is linked to economic growth.

The Idaho Job Vacancy Survey Report, released this month, is based on a survey of more than 3,400 businesses in April and May. During that time, according to the report, there were about 10,600 job openings across the state – a vacancy rate of 1.8 percent, with the highest rates in north-central and eastern Idaho.

But few of those jobs – only about 22 percent – were actually new positions, according to the report. The rest were to fill openings created by retirements, deaths or other reasons. They were also low-paying, with over half the openings offering a starting wage of less than $10 per hour. Just over half of the openings offered some type of group health insurance plan, the report said.

Job seekers were most likely to find openings in health care, accommodations and food services, and retail trade. Retail salespeople were most in demand, with 530 job openings statewide at the time of the survey.

Idaho’s vacancy rate was slightly higher than the 1.3 percent rate found in Oregon last year, but lower than the 2.7 percent rate reported in Washington in spring.

Vacancy rates in north-central Idaho and eastern Idaho were highest, coming in at 2.5 percent. The figures were about 1.9 percent in southeastern Idaho, 1.8 percent in the north, 1.5 percent in the southwest and 1.4 percent in the south-central.

    Unemployed British Youth

As per DNA ( Sept.20,2010 ), British cabinet minister Vince Cable has stirred controversy by suggesting that unemployed young Britons should be sent to India to find work.

According to the minister, it was time to end the one-way flow of skilled workers from India to the UK and claimed that British graduates should be able to go in the opposite direction to India where the economy has boomed.

    Good idea !

And since Google India just announced that it will pay Rs. 100,000 by way of referral fees to anyone who recommends a software engineer ( subject to employment offer from Google and joining ), this opens up another opportunity to Vince Cable.

By recommending British software guys to Google India, he can earn their gratitude ( and votes ? ) while simultaneously helping to reduce the budget deficit of Pounds 170.8 billions.

Hurry up. Google offer expires on Oct.15, 2010 !

    With regards
