FedEx National’s facility in Boise will close Jan. 30 as part of a national consolidation, spokeswoman Ann Saccomano said.
FedEx National employs eight at 1325 N. Hickory Ave., Meridian, an employee there said.
About 1,700 positions and 100 facilities will be closed companywide, FedEx Corp. said in its quarterly earnings report in September. The company said it is combining FedEx Freight and FedEx National to boost efficiency and cut costs.
The number of Boise-area employees displaced by the move was not available. Saccomano said FedEx was not required to file a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice with the Idaho Department of Labor. FedEx in Idaho has not filed a notice that would be required if an employer of more than 100 plans to lay off at least 50, department spokesman Bob Fick said.
Some displaced employees will move to other positions within FedEx Freight, and the employees also can apply for positions with other units such as FedEx Express and FedEx Office, Saccomano said.
“Some will be taking retirement, and others, depending on the situation, will be leaving the company and will be receiving severance,” she said. “We are working with our team members to help minimize the impact. We recognize this is a difficult time for them.”
FedEx National is the company’s long-haul operation. The company for the last four years has run its short-haul and long-haul operations as separate networks under the FedEx Freight operating company, and effective Jan. 30 will combine them, Saccomano said.
“There was quite a bit of overlap nationally,” she said.
A goal of consolidation is to improve convenience for customers, who will have one driver and one invoice, she said.
Boise-area customers will continue to have access to long-haul and short-haul service through FedEx Freight, Saccomano said. The FedEx Freight Service Center in Boise is at 111 N. Cloverdale Road.
