With the New Year just around the corner, it’s important for the Boise Young Professionals (BYP) to reflect on our accomplishments of the past with an eye towards making an even greater impact on the Boise Valley in 2011. As the incoming Chair of this vibrant, active and important organization, I’m honored to be working with a new leadership team that has identified some important goals for the future.
Over the past several years BYP has worked hard to find its place in the community, offering events that focus on a variety of topics that affect young professionals in the Boise Valley. Since its inception in 2006, the organization has had over 1000 members, with a current membership in excess of 600. As one of the largest active young professional organizations in the country we have been heralded as a model for other cities around the country.
BYP is like any growing company – it must adapt to an ever changing environment around it. With a struggling economy and increasing numbers of young professionals out of work, we continually listen to our members and refine our offerings and how we implement programs and events. Our mission of attracting, developing and retaining young professionals in the Boise Valley is still our primary focus. We will continue to meet this mission through connecting, empowering and engaging our members to be better citizens.
How will we do this?
In 2011, we plan to enhance several of our programs. Ending this year with our largest b|wise mentoring program, our Professional & Leadership Development work team intends to offer two sessions of this amazing program to our members next year. By affording our members with the ability to meet and learn from highly respected business and community leaders, our organization is helping to instill the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the next generation of leaders.
Each year the Community & Civic Involvement work team arranges a day of service to provide our members the opportunity to collectively give back to the community. In March (National community involvement month) they will debut an event that will greatly surpass previous days of service. Moreover, it will set a standard for the future and demonstrate how young professionals can utilize their skills for giving back to the community.
Our Events & Networking work team is already scheduling next year’s events. If you have never attended one of the monthly luncheons, you are missing out. This team will continue to seek out new and engaging speakers that will empower our members to learn more about what is happening in the community and ways to further their involvement. They are also hard at work planning our 5th annual celebration which will occur in October.
Last year Ben Quintana, manager of BYP wrote an article in this publication entitled Networking: Building Relationships is Key to Success. According to him, two of the ways to readily build relationships is through finding a regular place to network and volunteer. If you are looking at increasing your network, while also impacting our community, then check out BYP. There is no better time then now to get involved as we head into the most exciting year in our organizations history.
