Most Idaho workers consider themselves lucky if they merely have a job. Granted, they may complain about their boss, co-workers and benefits – or lack thereof – but for 40 hours a week, they’ve got someplace they have to be.

Then there are those who can’t wait to clock in.

“It’s way too much fun here, I tell ya,” said Richie Snider, customer service representative at Bodybuilding.com. The company takes care of its employees, he said. “They’re really open about (giving) time off, have a great bonus system and great benefits.”

It’s because of such employee testimonials from Snider and his co-workers that Bodybuilding.com joins the 2011 list of Best Places to Work in Idaho. The Idaho Business Review teamed with Populus, a nationally recognized marketing research company headquartered in Boise, to identify the best places to work in Idaho and the best practices to attract and retain employees.

“The competition this year was tougher than it’s ever been,” said Paul Butcher, president and director of research for Populus.

Any Idaho company with 20 or more employees is eligible to participate in the annual Best Places to Work survey. This year, 31 companies signed on and Populus collected information from thousands of employees, voluntarily given and confidentially held. The companies then were scored in five categories:

1) Compensation and benefits
2) Work environment
3) Company management
4) Employee growth and development
5) Work-life balance

“The University of Phoenix is deeply honored and humbled to be named one of Idaho’s Best Places to Work,” said Bill Bach, campus director, University of Phoenix, Idaho Campus, another company that made the cut.

“These top companies should be very proud,” said Idaho Business Review Publisher and Vice President Sean Evans. “In today’s business climate it is increasingly important for Idaho businesses to compete effectively for qualified and motivated employees. The employees have spoken – these are the 2011 Best Places to Work in Idaho.”

The stories of this year’s recipients will be featured in the IBR’s upcoming pullout magazine.

The ranking order from No. 1 to No. 10 Best Places to Work in two categories – small and large organizations – will be announced during an event in which all 20 companies will be recognized. The ticketed event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. April 21 on the second floor of The Grove Hotel. It is open to the public and includes a networking and social reception, hors d’oeuvres and award ceremony. Dress is business casual. Individual tickets are $50 ($65 after April 14). Table sponsorships also are available. For details and to register for the event, click here.

You’ve done everything right. You’ve adopted the concept of “perpetuity” so that the firm now thinks and plans for the long term. You’ve groomed a solid core of good leaders who are trusted, share common values, are committed to the firm’s long-term success and are at least two generations deep. You’ve gradually expanded ownership of [...]
