Battelle should get an “F”, and not just for a nuclear accident. Since 2005 they’ve wandered in confusion over their role, being the (expensive) academics at heart they really are. Other national labs are run by globally-aware, profit-oriented, mission and action-driven enterprises; not Battelle @ INL. They are absolutely no closer to any kind of nuclear energy breakthrough they were the first day of their contract seven years ago. Meanwhile that industry is proposing innovative new things privately and internationally that INL should have been at the forefront of all along. Clueless.

Battelle academics went and blithely picked a very conforming, risk averse, highly-stratified leadership profile, coming from the nuclear navy that inherently believed, “why yes, I have so many stars on my sleeve, I most certainly can run and motivate a national lab full of bright, creative types; they’ll do exactly as I say, just like in the Navy, errr right?”

(Better not rock that ship or they might go off and do something so innovative it could actually make a serious difference)
