Twenty companies doing business in the state will be honored this year as part of the annual Best Places to Work in Idaho program.

The program, now in its third year, is co-sponsored by the Idaho Business Review, POPULUS and Price Associates. The honored companies are recognized for strong workplace environments that demonstrate best practices in employee attraction and retention. Eight of the 20 businesses received recognition in last year’s program.

Honorees will be honored by the Idaho Business Review at a Best Places to Work awards reception 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 29 at the Stueckle Sky Club on the Boise State University campus, 1910 University Drive. The reception is open to the public. Individual tickets are $50. Tickets and table sponsorships can be purchased by contacting Megan Wood at (208) 639-3520 or megan.wood@idahobusinessreview.com.

Honorees will also be profiled in an Idaho Work Force - Best Places to Work magazine, publishing in the Idaho Business Review on April 26. Copies of the magazine will also be available at the awards event, sponsored by PacificSource.

A total of 42 companies statewide participated in the program this year. For many, it was their first time taking part in the evaluation.

Criteria to choose the top finishers are determined through employer reports and comprehensive employee surveys. Honorees were selected from two categories: small to medium-sized companies of between 20 and 99 employees and large-sized companies consisting of 100 or more employees.

“These 20 companies are among the state’s best employers who take pride in creating an environment that allows workers to feel respected and be productive; they also recognize how this helps the company be successful and reach its goals,” said Ron Price, president of Price Associates.

“Considering the tough economic times of the past year-plus, it was especially encouraging to see so many Idaho companies fitting the criteria, as well as so many new companies taking part in the evaluation,” Price said. “The confidential feedback from employees is invaluable and really the most important aspect of the process.”

A calculation of the surveys was performed by POPULUS, a Boise-based firm specializing in survey metrics for management.

Organizations who endorsed this year’s program include: Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce, Buy Idaho, Greater Pocatello Chamber of Commerce, Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, HRATV, Idaho Department of Labor, Idaho State Council of SHRM, Meridian Chamber of Commerce, Nampa Chamber of Commerce, SHRM, SHRM Southeast Idaho Chapter, Sun Valley/Ketchum Chamber & Visitors Bureau and Twin Falls Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Division of Financial Management crunched its numbers for the past quarter, leaving no doubt: economists still have no idea where Idaho's economy is headed.

It may be the most misused or perhaps the most fraudulent word in our political language – the word “moderate” that is. We hate it in our own political parties, yet ask for tolerance and respect for it in others. It doesn’t work either way.
