Feds could expand Idaho mining waste respository

Officials with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency are considering expanding the Big Creek Repository to keep up with Superfund cleanup of mining waste.

The Coeur d’Alene Press reports the agencies could expand the repository by up to 200,000 cubic yards. It currently has a 500,000 cubic yard capacity, and Andy Mork with the state environmental department says the repository is running out of room.

The repository opened in 2002.
