Fresh off a long holiday weekend, many of the world’s most influential media and technology executives are expected to arrive July 6 at a posh resort to ponder new idea, possible deals and have a little fun, too.
The five-day gathering in the Idaho mountains has been an annual rite since 1983 when the investment bank Allen & Co. began to host its media conference in Sun Valley, a popular getaway among the rich and famous.
Allen & Co. keeps its guest list a closely guarded secret, but conference regulars include prominent CEOs such as Rupert Murdoch of News Corp., Eric Schmidt of Google Inc., Robert Iger of Walt Disney Co. and Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com Inc. Two of the world’s richest men, stock market sage Warren Buffett and Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates, also were on hand last year.
When they aren’t playing tennis, golfing, biking, swimming, fishing and rafting, the attendees are cloistered in closed-door presentations about emerging opportunities and business challenges.
Although it’s an invitation-only conference, reporters, photographers and TV crews now flock to the resort to document what happens during the meeting breaks and late-night drinking sessions.
