Employees say tax commish helped pal

Idaho State Tax Commission employees say Chairman Royce Chigbrow tried to use his position to help a friend who is embroiled in a dispute with a business partner.

Documents show Chigbrow sought to help Benton “Skip” Hofferber, who supported Chigbrow’s unsuccessful 2006 run for state controller.

Tax Commission employees say Chigbrow summoned them to give Hofferber information about the company after Hofferber claimed he was fired “in bad faith.”

Documents say Chigbrow also inappropriately handled payments from the company and tried to block a refund it was owed.

In an e-mail to The Associated Press, Chigbrow says he forwards his friends’ requests for help to other employees but doesn’t try to influence the outcome.
