Three Idaho startups win statewide business competition

Three startup companies won big during a competition at TechLaunch 8.0 held in Boise May 17-18.

Appible of Rexburg won the Entrepreneurial Idol prize of $10,000, sponsored by the Idaho National Laboratory. Two by Four Sports, a University of Idaho student business team, won the Next Gen event and an award package worth $5,000 including $2500 in services from law firm Perkins Coie and $2500 in cash. SnapShot Postcard of Nampa won the Perkins Coie People’s Choice Award of $5,000.

In addition, student teams competing in the Idaho Ideas-to-Market (I2M) event presented their market assessments of patented technologies developed at the Idaho National Laboratory. Idaho State University took first place, with University of Idaho, and Washington State University, finishing second and third place respectively.

“Each year, the competition at TechLaunch is more intense,” said Melanie Rubocki, Idaho TechConnect board chair and managing partner of Perkins Coie. “The talent and ideas in the room are inspiring. The judges really had their work cut out for them this year.”

Approximately 100 entrepreneurs, would-be-entrepreneurs, investors and others interested in starting a business participated in the eighth year of TechLaunch, an event developed by Idaho TechConnect and Idaho National Laboratory. This competition puts regional startup companies in the spotlight and provides them the opportunity to pitch their product or service to a panel of judges. Judges represented the financing food chain and included commercial bankers, angel investors, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs.
