Accident stops work at the Lucky Friday Mine

Work has stopped at the Lucky Friday Mine in northern Idaho as Hecla Mining Company officials and federal investigators look into an accident that happened late on Nov. 17.

According to Hecla, the accident occurred as part of the construction of a new shaft at the underground silver, lead, and zinc mine. Two contractors were drilling and blasting rock.

“For reasons that are unknown at this time, the two men were drawn into material that was moving underneath them,” the company said in a prepared statement.

One of the workers was released from the hospital, but  the other has not yet been released ,the company said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and for a safe recovery of the injured contractor,” said Phil Baker, President and CEO, Nov. 18.  “Operating our mines safely is a top priority for Hecla, and we will continue to work to prevent such incidents from occurring.”

Staff from the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration are investigating. Mining at the site has stopped for the investigation, company officials said.
