Boise Mayor David Bieter presented EnviroGuard Sustainability Awards to the owners of two Boise businesses.
Dave Krick, Jami Adams and Kevin Kelpe, owners and managers of Bittercreek Alehouse and Red Feather Lounge, earned the first-ever “visionary” award in recognition of their efforts toward sustainability in the restaurants. Since 2006, the company has eliminated more than 70 percent of the waste it sends to the landfill and significantly reduced its energy use. It also uses vermicomposting via the Urban Worm Project to compost food waste at both restaurants. A kitchen renovation planned for 2013 aims to further reduce energy usage.
Excel Equipment Company owner Michel Cunningham accepted the company’s business award. The heavy equipment rental and sales company has worked to bring its facility up to environmental standards, and has gone beyond industry and environmental regulatory requirements. The company uses a self-engineered wash-pad wastewater recovery, treatment and recycling system. It retains used oil on-site and uses it to heat maintenance buildings, and presses and extracts oil from old filters and then recycles the steel.
