A small Boise Buddhist temple plans to expand its gathering space.

The Linh Thuu Buddhist Meditation Temple serves as the main gathering and spiritual center for the Treasure Valley’s Vietnamese population. Located at 2312 Overland Road, the temple sits on a small property that includes a house, garage and car port. The temple hosts religious meetings and celebrations, some which include prayer and chanting.

In 2004, the city approved the conversion of the garage into a temple for celebrations and other events. Today, a lack of room and a noise citation prompted members to consider tearing down the garage and building an indoor-only gathering space.

Linh Thuu Spokeswoman Tiny Ngyuen said Boise Planning & Zoning approved the demolition car port in late October, and approved plans to construct a new building that is 1,626 square feet.

“Weather-wise and in regards to noise especially during three major holidays a year, an enclosed space will be ideal,” Ngyuen said.

A construction timeline is still being determined and will be based on fundraising efforts. The area’s Vietnamese population numbers around a few thousand, Ngyuen said.
