With close to 200 legal professionals, family, friends and colleagues on hand, one might expect to hear at least one joke about lawyers.

The notion of lawyer jokes was bandied about in speeches by Attorney General Lawrence Wasden and Scott D. Hess, of counsel for Holland and Hart, at Idaho Business Review’s 2015 Idaho Leaders in Law Nov. 17.

But the tone of the night was one of respect and honor for the 24 people who were lauded for their leadership in their profession and in the communities in which they live.

“The words ‘honored and humbled’ don’t even begin to describe how I feel standing here and receiving this award,” said Hess, while accepting the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award. Attorney General Wasden, recipient of the same award in 2014, passed the torch in an equally moving speech. Donald L. Burnett, Jr. received the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award. At the time, Burnett was serving as interim president at the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Other awards included those received by partners, an associate, up-and-coming lawyers (in their first 10 years and on their way up), a sole practitioner, in-house counsel, educators, and an unsung hero.

This is the third year for the IBR peer-reviewed awards program. Selection committees made up of a dozen past honorees, a representative from the University of Idaho and Idaho Business Review editors, chose this year’s class, scoring them in four categories: professional achievements, leadership in the legal profession, volunteering in the community, and leadership in community service.

Selecting the winners is daunting.

“It is difficult to assign numerical criteria to folks who have given incalculable contributions to our profession,” said Kinzo Mihara, an attorney for Howard Funke & Associates PC in Coeur d’Alene, and a 2013 Leaders in Law honoree. “All the candidates had impressive accomplishments and were highly recommended by well-regarded sources.”

A magazine featuring profiles of the 2015 Idaho Leaders in Law is published with this week’s issue of Idaho Business Review.
