The Benchmark outdoor adventure equipment store is shutting down as soon all the inventory is sold after 31 years at the same Vista Avenue location on the Boise Bench.

Owner Emil Hutton started the clearance sale April 14.

“We planned for six weeks but we’ll be done in a few more days,” Hutton said on April 30. “All we did was backpacking, camping, mountaineering and travel.”

Hutton is closing the store to retire. He also owned an outdoor store in Michigan for 16 years prior to moving to Boise. He tried to sell the business but found no buyers.

“This economy is not favorable (to sell an outdoors equipment store),” said Hutton, who is also trying to sell the building that houses the store.

The 16,720-square-foot structure was built in 1949 and sits on .76 acre. The Ada County Assessor assessed the property at $829,700.
