Given all the noise recently over labor shortages and employee wages, the Idaho Business Review took a look around to see what national and regional retailers are paying right now in Idaho.

Walmart announced that it is giving over a half a million employees a $1 an hour pay increase effective on or before Sept. 25, according to a Sept. 3 article in trade publication retaildive.com. The current minimum wage at Walmart is $11 and is higher than that in most markets. For example, all deli and bakery employees start at $15. Walmart claims the average hourly wage for the retailer is more than $18. Walmart employs approximately 1.6 million sales associates in the United States alone.
Walgreens announced on Aug. 31 that its employees will earn a minimum hourly wage of $15. The wage increase will take “effect in phases beginning in October, and are expected to be fully implemented by Nov. 1, 2022.”

CVS Health announced on Aug. 4 that all
employees will earn a minimum hourly wage of $15 effective July 2022, with incremental increases starting this month. Around 65% already earn more than this.
Target announced on June 5 that is would raise its minimum hourly wage to $15 effective July 15. The retailer also has provided free telehealth doctor visits through the end of the year.

Costco employees have been making an hourly wage of $16 since March. The average Costco wage is higher, at $24.
Amazon’s current starting hourly wage is $15.
The average hourly wage at McDonald’s for a crew member in Idaho is approximately $9.63, according to indeed.com. At Wendy’s, it’s $8.59. A produce clerk at Albertsons in Idaho makes an average hour wage of $14.12. A sales associate at Home Depot in Idaho makes $11.26/hour. A cashier at a Maverick in Boise makes an hourly wage of $11. The average hourly wage for a barista at Starbucks in Idaho is $11.81.
