Accomplished Under 40, Icon winners honored by IBR

Forty young professionals and 10 innovative leaders were honored Thursday by the Idaho Business Review.

The event, Accomplished Under 40, was presented by the College of Business and Economics (COBE) at Boise State University. The gathering coincided with the Icon Awards, which paid tribute to 10 change-makers over the age of 50 who have consistently ignited innovation and demonstrated exemplary leadership within their respective industries.

“The 40 professionals honored this year are truly inspiring. It’s exciting to witness the great talent that is among these young leaders of Idaho,” said IBR Publisher Cindy Suffa of the Accomplished Under 40 winners.

She added: “It was humbling to hear from the Icon Award honorees as they shared their words of wisdom to the guests–I want to thank all those who attended the event and the continued support from COBE.”

Icon winners shared their personal stories of perseverance, innovation, and leadership at the event, acknowledging the individuals who played a pivotal role in their success, and recognizing that they would not have reached their current achievements without the support of others:

“We are all dominoes and as we lean into one another and we use our strengths and our talents and our resources, we can literally change not only our families, but our communities and maybe even the world,”  Sheli Gartman, CEO of WICON & Align Trainings, said. “This is very motivating to me. It’s very humbling. It’s very much an honor. Thank you very much, IBR, and all of the amazing sponsors.”

“I want to thank all the farmers and ranchers across this state and across our nation who work incredibly hard every day to make sure we have safe, abundant and affordable food, so that we can eat three times every day,” said Russ Hendricks, Idaho Farm Bureau Federation director and Icon winner. “They inspire me and keep me going and I appreciate everything that they do.”

To commemorate the accomplishments of these esteemed leaders, the Idaho Business Review published two separate magazines—one for the AU40 honorees and another for the Icon Awards winners. Subscribers can look forward to receiving these publications on June 23, 2023.

Forty of Idaho’s brightest young stars will share the spotlight in June when Idaho Business Review honors them with this year’s Accomplished Under 40 Award, presented by Boise State University’s College of Business and Economics (COBE)

Through its AU40 awards program, IBR honors dynamic people in industry, government and the nonprofit sector who will be the decision-makers of tomorrow. The AU40 awards rules are simple: Prospective honorees must be a resident of Idaho or working in the state, and they must be under the age of 40 as of June 15, 2023.

Determining the finalists involves a two-step nomination and application process: First, an individual must be nominated by the community at large. This nomination could come from anyone who knows the individual well — be that colleagues, friends or family members. Self-nominations are also accepted.

The second step requires the person who is nominated to fill out an application for consideration and to submit letters of recommendation, resumes and other pertinent background information. Once the application window closes, a judging panel of past winners undertakes the task of scoring the many qualified candidates, taking into account the categories of professional achievement, leadership, mentorship and community service. The top-scoring candidates, based on a unified scoring system, are then named the 40 finalists.

“We are lucky to have such amazing young talent in our state and I look forward to recognizing this impressive AU40 class!” said IBR Publisher Cindy Suffa.

This year’s program will be co-located with IBR’s Icon Awards, which honor Idaho’s change-makers over the age of 50 — pioneers who are in a class of their own, continue to kick-start innovation and champion their industry through professional creativity and leadership. It’s a unique opportunity for these two generations to get in a room together to network and learn from each other.

This year’s awards program to honor the AU40 and Icon Award winners will be held in person at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 15,2023, at Boise Center. Tickets are available now.

The leaders will be profiled in a printed magazine (two separate publications for AU40 and Icon Award winners.) to be distributed at the awards event and then released to subscribers on June 23, 2023. The 2023 Icon Award honorees can be found here.

Be sure to congratulate the 40 accomplished individuals listed below:

Ten prominent Idahoans who have left an enduring mark on our communities will be honored by Idaho Business Review in June with the 2023 Icon Awards.

This will mark the sixth year of the annual Icon Awards program, where IBR honors influential Idahoans — icons over the age of 50 — who have helped Idaho’s business community grow and left a legacy worthy of a lifetime achievement award.

The program’s honorees are nominated each year from colleagues, mentees, peers and community members who feel these icons deserve to be called out for their dedication to their communities and organizations and their accomplishments thus far in their lifetimes. The list of candidates is then narrowed down by an internal IBR committee. This year, the 10 honorees represent individuals who continue to champion their industry through professional creativity, innovation and leadership.

This is the second year of a new tradition, where IBR will co-locate the Icon Awards with IBR’s Accomplished Under 40 awards. The combination offers the opportunity to have the different generations in one space, networking and learning from one another.

“I look forward to taking the stage to honor these 10 incredible honorees who not only lead in their respective roles with passion but have a true passion for business in Idaho and for Idaho.”  said IBR Publisher Cindy Suffa, who led the nomination committee.

The 2023 Icons will be celebrated in person on Thursday June 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Boise Centre East. Tickets for the ceremony and networking event are available now.

In addition, the icons will be profiled in a printed magazine that will feature their stories and career highlights — to be distributed at the awards event and then released to subscribers on June 23.

The award is open to those aged 50 and over who have demonstrated a track record of leadership, professional accomplishments, community service and vision. Nominations are accepted year-round. To nominate a trailblazing and innovating individual for next year’s Icon Awards, visit IBR’s website.

Accomplished Under 40 event celebrates 20th anniversary

More than 300 people attended this year’s Accomplished Under 40 dinner and award reception, which honored 40 Idaho business people less than 40 years old for their achievements in business and philanthropy.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the event was held on June 20 at the Galaxy Event Center at Wahooz, in Meridian.

The 40 awardees came from around the state, in a variety of industries, ranging from large for-profit companies to small nonprofits. Guests included many past Accomplished Under 40 honorees, a handful of CEO of Influence winners and representatives from all three major universities, as well as coworkers, friends and family.

“This year’s class comes from a wide diversity of backgrounds and industries, and I am confident that they will continue to shape Idaho as our next generation of leaders,” said Rebecca Palmer, Idaho Business Review special sections editor, introducing the honorees. “We have honorees in oncology, education, the law, architecture, banking and more. Each one goes above and beyond after hours, working on charitable endeavors that make Idaho great.”

Nicole Skinner, a recent graduate from the University of Idaho with bachelor’s degrees in economics and political science and a minor in psychology — who also served as student body president and as a recent substitute for Judge Judy — led off the evening.

“I really relied on the mentors in my life to challenge me,” Skinner said, saying that they exposed her to different kinds of thought than the ones with which she grew up. We are all standing on the shoulders of the people who came before us, she said.

Skinner encouraged attendees to be mentors to the next generation, which is eager for its own opportunity to change the world. Attendees should consider it their responsibility to find them, she said. “Celebrate yourselves,” but also think about how to bring more people in to spread the impact that you have created, she told attendees.

To acknowledge the program’s 20th anniversary, presenters were drawn from the ranks of previous Accomplished Under 40 honorees — one of whom, Troy McClain (2005), went on to be named a CEO of Influence this year as well for his work as founder and CEO at Tovuti.

Other Accomplished Under 40 alumni who acted as presenters for the evening included Todd Grande (2002), now national channel manager for Max Giving; Suzie Hall (2003), president of Cornerstone Design; Rhea Allen (2006), co-founder of Peppershock Media; Karena Boesel (2010), vice president of membership for the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce; Natalie Lemas Hernandez (2016), chief executive officer and owner of Commercial Northwest Property Management; and Paul Hales, CEO of Mass Mutual of Idaho.

Representing the value of music to this generation, attendees chose their own favorite retro music, and presenters came on the stage to music that was popular the year they received their own Accomplished Under 40 awards.

In addition, Idaho Business Review multimedia sales executive Autumn Kersey appeared throughout the evening to throw confetti and remind attendees of “fun facts,” trivia and other tidbits from the past 20 years. These included Idaho-specific events such as the first Boise State University football Fiesta Bowl victory (2007), the naming of former governor Dirk Kempthorne as Secretary of the Interior under President George W. Bush (2006) and Snowmaggedon (2016-2017), In addition, she mentioned national and international milestones such as the founding of Facebook (2004), the Salt Lake City World Winter Olympics (2002) and the formation of the national Do Not Call registry (2003).

The evening ended with a dance party featuring music from many decades.

The Idaho Business Review received scores of applications for the honor, which recognizes outstanding young people for excellence in leadership, professional accomplishments, mentorship and community service.
