Cooper Balke serves as a key brewer at MickDuff’s Brewing Company, one of North Idaho’s most established and acclaimed craft breweries located in downtown Sandpoint. His brewing expertise has been instrumental in maintaining the brewery’s reputation for quality handcrafted ales and lagers since its founding in 2006 by brothers Mickey and Duffy Mahoney.

Balke gained regional recognition in 2017 when he claimed the prestigious Brewmaster title at the Newport Hospital and Health Services Foundation’s Iron Sommelier and Brewmaster Event, demonstrating his skill in creating exceptional beer pairings with gourmet cuisine. His brewing expertise was showcased through MickDuff’s signature offerings including Idaho Amber and LaCerveza Mexican light lager, earning praise for their creative pairing potential.

Under Balke’s brewing contributions, MickDuff’s has grown from its original brewpub location to include a second Beer Hall and production facility, expanding in 2014 to meet growing demand. The family-owned, family-focused brewery now operates two downtown Sandpoint locations and distributes kegs throughout Idaho’s northern 10 counties and central and eastern Washington. Balke works with all-natural ingredients, emphasizing Idaho-grown hops and barley, helping MickDuff’s maintain its position as a cornerstone of north Idaho’s thriving craft beer scene with its year-round lineup of lagers, ales and seasonal brews.

Mike Garcia has owned Loose Screw Beer Co. for three years, drawing from 20 years of commercial finance experience, including 12 years specifically in the brewery industry. His most significant recent accomplishment was transforming a building in Meridian’s downtown into a new brewery and taproom.

“We transformed a 10,000-square-foot building in the historic Old Town district into something completely new, far beyond what it was originally designed for,” Garcia said.

The Meridian-based brewery now operates two locations and has grown to 17 employees. Garcia holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a finance concentration from University of Phoenix.

Recent additions include a canning line for expanded to-go sales and partnerships like Prairie BAARD, a collaboration with a former PGA golfer, and serving as stadium beer for the Boise Hawks. The business also supports many nonprofits.

“In the corporate world, it often felt like no matter how high I jumped, it was never enough,” Garcia said. “Now, every bit of hard work goes toward building something meaningful: Our mission to become one of the best breweries in Idaho.”

Sharon Glover-Salene grew up in Jefferson City, Missouri, and began her career in Kansas City, Kansas. Despite wanting to be a children’s book author when she grew up, she has an array of business expertise from her time with Kimberly-Clark and Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals. She spent more than 15 years working in sales and marketing with a variety of Fortune 500 companies.

She traveled and lived in various parts of the United States but moved to Idaho when she purchased BRJ Distributing at the end of 2005. Since then, she has grown and transformed the business, overseeing all sales, operations and portfolio management of the company.

The company merged with Idaho Wine Merchant in 2023 and she became the co-president and CEO. In 2024, she became president of IWM, under Hayden Beverage.

Today, the company is thriving and as she looks toward the future, Glover-Salene aims to bolster sales and continue prioritizing customer service and brand development.

Hailee Gove has owned and operated Jim Dandy Brewing in Pocatello for seven years, bringing a decade of brewing industry experience and a bachelor’s degree in microbiology and chemistry from Idaho State University to her craft.

Her brewery has earned multiple national awards and international recognition, but Gove finds equal satisfaction in community building. “The most meaningful accomplishments come from the areas we work hardest to master — for me, that’s the art of crafting exceptional beer,” she said. “But just as rewarding is the community we’ve built through our brewery taproom.”

Jim Dandy Brewing uses 90% Idaho-grown barley and hops, supporting local agriculture in a state that ranks first nationally in barley production and second in hops. The brewery has increased fermentation capacity fivefold during its seven years of steady growth.

Gove’s career began as a home brewer after college, followed by work as a microbiologist in Montana and experience at a Washington brewery before returning to her hometown.

“I honestly haven’t thought much about doing anything else, because I truly love my career,” she said. Her goals include expanding brewing space to accommodate continued growth and distribution.

Kevin Hanson is the owner and brewer of High Country Cider, a family-operated cidery nestled on five beautiful acres in Rathdrum, Idaho. What began as a family hobby in Hanson’s home kitchen in 2005 has evolved into one of Idaho’s respected craft cider producers, earning recognition at state competitions for its artisanal approach to cider-making.

Under Hanson’s leadership, High Country Cider has built a reputation for producing sulfite-free, unfiltered, organically sweetened ciders using fresh-pressed local fruit and berries often grown right on the property. The cidery specializes in seasonal small-batch ciders that showcase the rich, natural flavors of Idaho’s mountainous region.

High Country Cider has earned multiple awards at Idaho Wine and Cider Competitions, including a gold medal for its Pineapple-Caramel Cider at the 2024 competition, along with silver medals for Lemon-Basil, Strawberry and Pear ciders. Hanson’s dedication to time-honored techniques and pure ingredients has made High Country Cider a testament to authentic craft cider production, with products available at local restaurants and breweries throughout northern Idaho.

Brandon Hawkins has established himself as a driving force in north Idaho’s craft brewing scene through his ownership and leadership of Timber Town Beer Company in Priest River. Opening in spring 2021, the locally owned, family-friendly craft brewery serves handcrafted ales and lagers to the people of beautiful Priest River and all that visit.

Under Hawkins’ direction, Timber Town has quickly gained recognition for its innovative brewing approach and creative beer pairings. In 2024, Hawkins claimed the prestigious Brewmaster title at the annual Iron Sommelier and Brewmaster Event, besting the 2017 champion from MickDuff’s Brewing Company. Timber Town’s creative pairings of their craft brews with each course clinched the title, showcasing signature offerings including Bullbuck Golden Ale, Power Out Porter and Tangerine Hefeweizen.

Located in the historic Beardmore Building on Main Street, Timber Town operates from a restored space featuring large logging murals that showcase Priest River’s timber heritage. The brewery represents membership in Idaho Brewers United and contributes to the state’s thriving craft beer industry. Beyond brewing, Hawkins has expanded the business to include pub-style sandwiches and appetizers, creating a comprehensive local gathering place that celebrates both craft beer excellence and community connection in north Idaho.
