Thomas Wadsworth PharmD, MSOL, BCPS

Tom Wadsworth has served as dean for two years, leading Idaho State University’s pharmacy college across campuses in Pocatello, Meridian and Anchorage. His most significant recent accomplishment was creating the Center for Advancing Pharmacy Practice and Research Excellence (CAPPRE), which successfully advocated for pharmacists to be recognized and reimbursed as health care providers.

“CAPPRE’s success is transforming how health care is delivered and how pharmacy is practiced,” Wadsworth said. “It is shifting the conversation from ‘Should pharmacists be paid for healthcare services?’ to ‘How do we best integrate pharmacists to improve patient outcomes?’”

Through CAPPRE’s efforts, Idaho Medicaid now enrolls pharmacists as rendering providers, and commercial health plans reimburse them for health care services — particularly benefiting rural and underserved areas.

Wadsworth earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from ISU in 2002, completed residency at Boise VA Medical Center, and owned three community pharmacies over a decade before returning to academia.

“The biggest challenge has been confronting and changing the outdated systems that limit what pharmacists are allowed — and paid — to do, despite their advanced training and clinical expertise,” he said.

Key Accomplishments

Academic and Programmatic Leadership

Established the UAA/ISU Doctor of Pharmacy Program, creating a first-of-its-kind collaborative PharmD program between Idaho State University and the University of Alaska Anchorage. This effort expanded access to professional pharmacy education across Alaska and helped address critical workforce shortages in rural and underserved communities.

Led the transformation and stabilization of the L.S. Skaggs College of Pharmacy across three campuses (Pocatello, Meridian, and Anchorage), resulting in restored morale, balanced budgets, and one of the strongest ACPE accreditation renewals in the College’s history.

Practice and Policy Innovation

Key in establishing the Center for Advancing Pharmacy Practice and Research Excellence (CAPPRE) — advancing pharmacist provider status, payer reform, and practice-based research.

Principal Architect of the Sustainable Education and Training Model under Pharmacist Provider Reimbursement (SETMuPP) — a multi-year, initiative that trained pharmacists and developed billing infrastructure to operationalize pharmacist-provided care.

Author and Advocate for the Alaska Pharmacy Practice Modernization Act 2022, which mondernized the scope of pharmacist practice

Instrumental in achieving state and commercial payer recognition of pharmacists as rendering providers in both Idaho and Alaska, securing reimbursement parity and establishing new care access points across rural and frontier regions.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Community Pharmacy

Founded, owned, and operated multiple independent community pharmacies in southern Idaho, providing essential healthcare services to rural populations while building sustainable business models centered on clinical care delivery.

Established one of Idaho’s first telepharmacies, pioneering the integration of remote dispensing technology to maintain pharmacy access in medically underserved areas and setting precedent for statewide adoption.

Recognized as a thought leader and national speaker on leadership, pharmacist provider status reform, and modernized pharmacy practice models.
