In an age where deep fakes are getting more realistic and false information can be spread quickly, one app is working to combat disinformation.

And it was created in Boise, building on Idaho’s already booming tech industry.

The SWEAR app, which was created under the leadership of Jason Crawforth, co-founder of the Idaho Software Alliance, was developed over a period of seven years of research and development and verifies content’s authenticity using various methods.

SWEAR provides real-time cryptographic watermarks for media, “establishing an undeniable record of reality,” the company said in a statement.

“Boise has always been home to incredible innovation, and with SWEAR we’re proud to contribute to that legacy,” Crawforth said in a statement. “In the disinformation age, where truth is constantly under assault, SWEAR’s technology offers an unbreakable defense, ensuring the integrity of digital content from the moment of creation. Our technology isn’t just innovative, it’s necessary for anyone looking to secure the truth in the content they create and share.”

According to its developers, the app embeds a cryptographic watermark into each pixel and sound bite, securing media once it’s captured. It also utilizes a unique blockchain ledger, which offers privacy and proof of verifiable authenticity. The app gives users complete control to ensure privacy and authenticity, as well.

According to the company, “SWEAR’s role extends beyond serving individual users; it’s a vital asset for journalists, legal experts and creative professionals, providing a robust line of defense against the growing threat of synthetic media. As the mobile app goes live, plans are already underway to expand its technology to enterprises, with a launch slated for mid-2024.”

The app is available in the Apple App Store or can be downloaded at swear.com/app-download for those that wish to use it.
