Elaine Clegg’s professional training is in visual fine arts and worked for more than a decade doing graphic design. Although art is one of her passions, she landed on a career in public service and has since proven herself as adept and capable. Clegg joined Valley Regional Transit a year ago and since that time, she’s directed the staff to implement the biggest service change that the agency has undertaken to date ― an effort that has increased service frequency by 10%.

“The work I have done over the span of my career in public service has always been focused on finding Idaho solutions to challenging problems,” she said. “In that time, the various sectors I have worked in have seen progress not from my efforts alone, but, as with most issues, by group and ultimately community efforts that have grown around the issues I have worked on. These range from improved conditions for walking and biking to growth in Safe Routes to School programs and participation to urban and forest tree planting success. One person can be a catalyst, but it takes the small group support activities that grow into community support to see real progress.”

Clegg is looking forward to what’s ahead for Valley Regional Transit, and plans to expand service, build partnerships, while completing a planning study on high-capacity transit. She is also looking at leading a group of private sector interests to find solutions to transportation needs in the region.
