Walmart cottage cheese recalled. Idaho, other western states impacted

Check your refrigerator and any recent purchases, as Saputo Cheese USA Inc. has recalled certain cottage cheese products.

The recall was announced Feb. 24 and includes select Great Value brand cottage cheese sold at Walmart across 24 states, primarily in the West, Midwest and South, according to a news release by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

It was carried out because of the possibility of liquid dairy ingredients used in the items not being fully pasteurized according to state regulatory standards, posing a “significant health risk.”

Has any illness been associated with the Great Value cottage cheese recall?

While no illnesses or hospitalizations associated with the recalled products have been reported to date, consuming products that are not fully pasteurized can pose a significant health risk, especially for young and elderly or immunocompromised individuals.

As reported by the Federal Food and Drug Administration, the issue was discovered during pasteurizer troubleshooting exercises conducted by SUSA in conjunction with the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Which Great Value cottage cheeses were recalled?

The affected products were sold under the Great Value label and were distributed to Walmart stores and distribution centers in Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and Wyoming between Feb. 17 and Feb. 20.

Products include various 24 oz, 16 oz, and 3 lb containers of Fat Free, Low Fat, and 4% Small Curd cottage cheese.

These items have best by dates of April 1, 2, or 3.

All products were sold in white plastic tubs with white lids. The “best by” dates are located on the side of the lids.

What to do if you purchased Great Value cottage cheese

The Federal Food and Drug Administration is advising customers who purchased the affected products that they should not consume them and either dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
