Scott Stokes, director of the Idaho Transportation Department, will retire June 30, capping a nearly 35-year career with the agency he joined as a young engineer in 1991.
Stokes was appointed director in May 2022 after serving 15 years as the department’s chief deputy director. Over the course of his career, he also held roles as state bridge engineer and district engineer in Coeur d’Alene.
Gov. Brad Little credited Stokes with steering the department through a period of historic infrastructure investment tied to the Leading Idaho initiative.
“Director Stokes led the department during an unprecedented period of investment in Idaho’s transportation infrastructure, delivering projects that will strengthen our economy and benefit communities for generations,” Little said. “His decades of service reflect a deep commitment to building a safer, more efficient transportation system that supports opportunity across every region of Idaho.”
Under Stokes’ leadership, ITD drew recognition for innovative project delivery and a workplace culture centered on employee development and safety. The department also saw significant increases in transportation funding during his tenure.
Idaho Transportation Board Chairman Bill Moad thanked Stokes for his stewardship and expressed confidence in the agency’s future.
“His commitment to safety, stewardship of public resources and dedication to employees has made a lasting impact on ITD and the communities we serve,” Moad said.
Stokes reflected on the collaboration that defined his time at the agency.
“I have been most fortunate to be part of this very dedicated team who serves Idaho in transportation during a great period of growth and need,” he said.
Under Senate Bill 1300, Little will work with the Idaho Transportation Board to appoint Stokes’ successor. No timeline for that selection has been announced.
