Longtime Boise State University athletics administrator Curt Apsey is returning to the Broncos as athletic director, replacing Mark Coyle who left for Syracuse University. Apsey left Boise State last year to take the AD job at Carroll College in Montana.

Apsey was the interim athletic director at Boise State before Coyle was hired, following the departure of longtime athletic director Gene Bleymaier, who is now the AD at San Jose State University in California. Apsey was also the senior associate athletic director at Boise State for 16 years, before working at Carroll for just one school year.

In his previous tenure at Boise State, Apsey’s responsibilities included managing fundraising and overseeing media relations and sports information, marketing and promotions, ticketing and the Stueckle Sky Center. He led a capital campaign for athletic facilities that raised more than $70 million for football and basketball facilities from 2006 to 2012, including $37 million for the Stueckle Sky Center. He supervised several sports, including football, women’s soccer and men’s and women’s golf.

Apsey’s contract with Boise State is similar to Coyle’s, the university said, with a base salary of $331,500, plus incentives if Boise State’s athletes hit certain academic marks or on-field milestones, such as conference titles or reaching post-season play or bowl games.

Apsey begins at Boise State Aug. 1.  John Cunningham, senior associate athletic director for external relations, will serve as interim director until then.
