Last year in the U.S., an estimated 5.1 to 5.6 million new businesses opened their doors to the public. Idaho, with a growing population of around 2 million people, typically sees thousands of new companies launching across its diverse landscape.
But when people think of the word “startup,” they tend to imagine technology-based companies. Though tech companies are certainly part of the mix, startups can take any form, from restaurants and bakeries to consultants and certified public accountants.
One of the most commonly known facts about startups is that many do not last past the first year. If a new business makes it past year five, it typically has a better chance of staying open for many more years.
Here at Idaho Business Review, we always like hearing about new businesses that have the potential to contribute to the state’s economy, create new jobs and show the end result of someone’s dream. It’s never a happy story when one of those fledgling companies has to turn off the lights for good.
That said, we want to do what we can to highlight the best of the best. With our annual series of “In the Lead” sections, we endeavor to do just that. In our April 24, 2026, issue of Idaho Business Review, we will include “In the Lead: Best Startup Businesses.”
In that section, we will highlight startups with profiles that tell a bit about the new company, who owns it, where it’s located, how many employees it has and so on. But we need our readers’ help. The best way for us to feature these startups is by having you submit their information to us. If you’re the owner or employee of the business, you can submit the info yourself.
We want to shine the spotlight on startups!
