Following 700 miles of fiber network in Coeur d’Alene, TDS Telecom is expanding to Meridian.
TDS Telecom is investing between $80 million to $100 million into its fiber-to-the-home network, TDS telecom spokesperson Mike Wanta said in an email message, which will service 57,000 homes and businesses across Meridian, Garden City and parts of Boise. No other expansion elsewhere in the Treasure Valley is planned at this time.
“(The) Treasure Valley is an area that has traditionally been underserved, while the need for great connections and fast internet speeds continues to increase,” Wanta said. “The TDS fiber-to-the-home network is future-proof technology that will also foster additional growth and economic development for this booming region.”
TDS Telecom is the sole funding source for the project. The project will provide approximately 40 jobs, with the potential for more. Construction partners are KGPco, of Meridian, and Quanta, in Garden City. Service will be available in select areas in early 2021. Local businesses joining the network were unavailable for comment.
“That said, this is a very complex build and takes time and significant financial and operational resources to build our fiber network right,” Wanta said. “We ask for patience as we work through our construction. Once complete, the Treasure Valley will not only have a new competitor, it will enjoy some of the faster internet available in the country.”
Businesses within the network can order internet access and transport connections up to 10 gigabits per second via dedicated fiber, as well as TDS TV+, a new TV service, the company announced. TDS Telecom is based in Wisconsin.
A sales office, warehouse and retail office have been set up in Meridian. Those interested in connecting with TDS Telecom can contact commercial sales representative Scott McDonald, a Nampa High School graduate who recently moved back to the area after retiring from the U.S. Navy. McDonald can be reached at 208-609-4082 and [email protected].
“We are always identifying new opportunities for expansion, and we are getting closer to providing the Treasure Valley with the fastest speeds available,” Wanta said. “Area residents are starting to receive service, and we are looking forward to bringing service to more homes throughout the year.”
