Travis Christensen has served in his current role as technical skills leader with Idaho Power for the last four years. Initially coming into the role with a background in linework, Christensen notes that he had a narrow view of the work that Idaho Power was doing on a daily basis when he came into his leadership position.
“It requires me to think on an industrywide perspective and not have a ‘blinders-on’ view with training. I’m now continually focused on the multiple disciplines and trades that we train at Idaho Power and strive to make constant improvements,” Christensen said. “There is a quote we have in our lab that my team and I live by; it reads: ‘Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can do what others can’t.’”
As a technical skills leader, Christensen has been busy recently.
“I’ve played a key role in developing the training programs for Idaho Power’s new state-of-the-art Skills Training Center, which oversees the ongoing development and trade-skills training for approximately 1,000 employees per year, including those enrolled in our eight apprentice and three pre-apprentice programs,” Christensen said. “Our goal at Idaho Power’s Skills Training Center is to deliver relevant training with a hands-on approach so our field employees can immediately apply the skills they’re learning.”
Looking to the future, Christensen is working on several things, including developing a training center that will deliver relevant hands-on and skills-based training for Idaho Power’s Thermal Generation employees and regional dispatchers.
