Because of an increase in need for shelter, one nonprofit in Boise has increased its sleeping capacity.

Boise Rescue Mission increased its bed count by 58 to accommodate women and children experiencing homelessness.

The mission runs two shelters, with one in Boise and one in Nampa, providing shelter for 246 people. The additional beds were placed in its dormitory that is part of its Next Step Transitional Living facility at City Light Home for Women and Children.

The dormitory is located at 1417 W. Jefferson Street in Boise and was added in 2009, the nonprofit stated, “when the number of homeless women and children significantly rose in the community.” The need for services decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic and the dormitory was converted to classroom and meeting space for a children’s program.

“The number of guests seeking shelter have risen across the board, with women and children currently having the largest increase,” said Rev. Bill Roscoe, president and CEO of the Rescue Mission. “The timing of this change is great as our Summer Kids Program concluded last week.”

Roscoe stated that his organization is currently providing emergency shelter and other services, such as meals, case management, crisis pregnancy support, employment services and others, to more than 165 women and children each night.

“We want to provide beds for our guests in the best way possible,” he said.
