OROFINO―A Clearwater County man was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to first-degree arson for intentionally setting fire to his residence in a triplex, state officials announced Monday.
Casey Lane Heath, of Orofino, was sentenced April 7 in Second Judicial District Court to a unified four-year term ― two years fixed and two years indeterminate ― which was suspended in favor of four years of supervised probation. He was also ordered to pay $6,357.62 in restitution and serve 30 days in county jail as a condition of probation.
Investigators determined Heath set four separate fires inside his unit, igniting the kitchen, living room, a bedroom mattress and a closet. The Orofino Police Department, Orofino Fire Department and Deputy State Fire Marshal Josh Masterson jointly investigated the case.
The Idaho Department of Insurance’s State Fire Marshal’s Office, which announced the sentencing, said the case highlighted cooperation among agencies at multiple levels of government.
“This case shows the strong collaboration between local law enforcement, fire services and our State Fire Marshal investigators,” State Fire Marshal Knute Sandahl said. “Intentional fires put lives at risk ― not only the occupants, but also neighbors and first responders.”
In addition to jail time and restitution, Heath must complete community service and comply with all treatment recommendations as conditions of his probation.
The case was prosecuted in Clearwater County, where Orofino serves as the county seat.
