In a move to make becoming a child care worker easier, the City of Boise has extended a no-fee application process through 2024.
Along with no cost to new child care workers, the city is also providing an opportunity for free first aid and CPR training.
“We are excited to learn that the cost of obtaining a child care license, along with CPR and first aid fees will continue to be covered by the City of Boise for new applicants,” said Lori Fascilla, executive director for Giraffe Laugh Early Learning Centers. “Not all professions require a license to begin working, which can be discouraging for teachers entering the child care and preschool field.”
Fascilla went on to say that her organization has seen a noticeable improvement with teachers following through on licensing. She said it’s due to the fact that teachers don’t have to pay any costs before receiving their first paycheck.
Once the application process is complete, workers who need obtain certification for first aid and CPR will be given a code to access a free course from a third-party provider that meets certification requirements.
The no-cost programs only apply to new child care workers and not those who are renewing their license.
“We know having child care capacity is critical to the success of working parents who are most impacted by the growing need for child care in Boise,” said Kate Nelson, the director of community partnerships with the city. “Child care providers are vital to our economy and investing in those who provide quality, affordable child care is investing in our people.”
The program will continue through 2024 or until funding runs out. To learn more about the program, visit the application website.
