Transfer station in Nampa gets green light from county

What’s taken nearly three years to get approved and was called a “win-win” project is finally moving ahead.

Thanks to unanimous approval from the Canyon County commissioners, a full-service, solid-waste transfer station project will go forward in Nampa.

On May 17, the county commissioners approved the contract agreement and permits that will allow Timber Creek Recycling to build the $3 million facility which will provide recycling and solid waste transfer services. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the late fall or early winter this year.

“This new facility represents a significant opportunity for the community, fostering sustainable practices and enhancing waste management services in the region,” said Mike Murgoitio, CEO of Timber Creek Recycling.

Among the benefits the commissioners touted for the new facility were enhanced waste management, a strategic location and future expansion, the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovative recycling practices, and the economic benefits.

Timber Creek’s station will alleviate traffic and wait times for residents who use landfills to drop off household waste. According to the county commission, the new site will minimize “waste and trash along Missouri Avenue and throughout the country, as fewer vehicles will need to travel to and from the (current) landfill.”

The location of the station is near major routes and future expansion would also allow for connection to railroad lines for freight. Timber Creek, a release stated, manages more than 400 million pounds of recyclable materials annually.

“As a board, we’ve made every effort to do our due diligence and ensure this was a public process,” said Brad Holton, commission chair. “Transitioning from private business to intersecting with government can be cumbersome, and I appreciate Timber creek Recycling’s patience. At the end of the day, this partnership is an efficiency for Canyon County citizens and a win-win for both sides, which is not always common in government and private industry.”
