Celebrating 25 Years of Retail West Properties, LLC

A few weeks ago, I realized that Retail West Properties, LLC was formed 25 years ago — in June of 2000.

Choosing to work for myself always felt inevitable. My only regret is not doing it sooner.
The company name came to me on the way to the Secretary of State’s office, formation papers in hand. What kind of projects? Retail—that’s what I knew.
Where? The West—familiar turf, existing relationships, reasonable permitting. And just like that, we were off.

Looking back, the 25 years have passed far too quickly. Looking forward, more projects are on the horizon. Still, this is a good time to pause, take stock, reflect on our journey, and most importantly, recognize those accomplishments and thank those who have led, partnered, and supported us along the way. Fortunately, our robust filing system has helped jog my memory.

A Special Thanks

First, I must thank Nancy, my wife of 47 years, who was by my side in the early days of Retail West. She did it all—typing, filing (yes, paper files), answering calls, organizing, learning property management software, caring for tenants—you name it. Our office was small, and I was usually a bit too anxious.

Honestly, she had plenty of reasons to quit—but she didn’t.
This venture would not have been possible without Nancy’s love, patience, and unwavering support. The path wasn’t always sunlit, but her encouragement never faded.

The People Who Made It Possible

As I sifted through the files, project by project, I made a few lists—categorized in ways that best convey the ‘who, what, and where’ of what we’ve accomplished. The most proud of these is the lists of Partners, Mentors, Clients and Associates.

At the core, these are people and organizations who brought opportunity, shared in the heavy lifting, faced challenges, celebrated achievements, and, in many cases, changed the way I think. It’s incredibly fulfilling to reflect on the work and time spent collaborating with so many talented individuals.
I feel nothing but privilege to have been included in their spheres of influence—each unique, each invaluable.

As with any reflection like this, my biggest fear is inadvertently omitting someone. If that’s the case, please—call me and yell at me.
