Idaho’s rapidly growing citizenry provides more options for the state’s employers, but challenges remain in other areas such as available, affordable housing for workers.
One agency is working to help tackle the issue, providing free workforce housing training to help communities find solutions.
LEAP Housing announced its launch of Workforce Housing 101, a one-hour, self-paced online course, addressing the problem of housing costs outpacing wages throughout the state.
“Workforce housing isn’t just a housing issue — it’s an economic issue,” said Bart Cochran, founder and CEO of LEAP Housing. “Teachers, mechanics, welders and health care workers are the backbone of our communities. Without homes they can afford, our local economies and quality of life are at risk. This training helps communities take real steps toward solving that problem.”
The training is open to all residents, community leaders and organizations in Idaho at no charge, and it was paid for by Idaho’s Workforce Development Training fund.
Participants will learn the definition of workforce housing, how community leadership can shape housing opportunities, how to develop strategies, find funding sources and financing basics, and more.
The program runs approximately 80 minutes, and LEAP recommends that everyone from concerned residents to mayors, city councilmembers, business owners, educators and others participate.
“The availability of affordable housing is critical to a healthy economy,” said Wendi Secrist, executive director of the Idaho Workforce Development Council. “When people can afford to live in the communities where they work, businesses thrive, schools are stronger, and families are more stable. LEAP Housing’s Workforce Housing 101 training equips community partners with the knowledge and tools to turn local ideas into real housing projects that meet the needs of Idaho’s workforce.”
According to a release, those who participate in the training will be automatically invited to monthly statewide network calls to connect with community leaders and industry experts.
