Fall is here. School is back in full swing. Routines feel normal again. But this is also the time of year when many families stop thinking about saving for education. My message is simple: It’s not too late to start, and every dollar can still makes a difference.
A lot of people assume they should have started saving years ago. That belief stops them from doing anything now. The truth is that even small, consistent contributions can potentially grow into something meaningful over time. With IDeal, you can open an account with just $25. It doesn’t have to be a large investment to make a real difference. Setting up automatic contributions is an easy way to build savings without having to think about it every month. What matters most is taking that first step and sticking with it. Those who contribute to an IDeal account can qualify for the state tax deduction if they are Idaho taxpayers. It’s a two-for-one gift!
Some families believe 529 plans like IDeal can only be used at a four-year college, but that’s simply not true. Education is more flexible today and so is IDeal. Funds can now be used for trade schools, registered apprenticeships, professional certificates, student loan repayment and even certain K-12 expenses like tutoring, testing or tuition. The way people learn and train for careers is changing, and IDeal is designed to support that. No matter which path a student chooses, there’s a way to use these savings.
The holidays are coming up, and many of us are already thinking about gifts. Toys and gadgets are fun, but they don’t last. A contribution to an IDeal account is different. It’s a gift that keeps growing and shows a child you believe in their future. I hear from many Idaho grandparents who say contributing to a grandchild’s education is one of the most meaningful things they’ve ever done. It’s not just about money. It’s about investing in opportunity.
You don’t need a perfect plan to begin. If you don’t have an account yet, now is a great time to open one. If you already do, consider increasing your contributions or setting up automatic contributions through your bank or payroll direct deposit. And if you’re unsure how the program works or what’s possible, reach out. We’re here to help families understand their options. Every family’s journey looks different, but all families benefit from planning ahead. IDeal exists to make saving easier, more flexible, and more impactful. It’s never too late to start working toward a stronger future.
