Stanley was recently named one of America’s “best mountain towns” by Outside Magazine. Nestled in the Sawtooth Mountains, this hidden gem features dramatic scenery perfect for one-of-a-kind exploration. Stanley was named 16 on a list of 24 cities across the United States.
Dani Schoeben, outgoing grants and marketing manager for the Stanley Chamber of Commerce shared, “Stanley is unique as a mountain destination because it offers more than just breathtaking scenery — it provides a true sense of place.”
Outdoor lovers flock to Stanley for unbeatable hiking and mountain biking trails, refreshing natural hot springs, fly fishing opportunities, rafting adventures and backcountry skiing, while nearby 1,500-acre Redfish Lake provides a spectacular spot for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking or just simply relaxing lakeside. Stanley Lake is also a must-see destination and offers sweeping views of McGown Peak.

Another highly visited area is the Iron Creek Trailhead, a launching point for backpackers and hikers who want to head into the wilderness.
“With multiple trail routes branching from this trailhead, it attracts visitors of varying experience levels — from day hikers to seasoned backpackers — making it one of the most important access points into the backcountry,” Schoeben said.
Stanley is also part of the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve and is the first designated Dark Sky Reserve in the nation.
Beyond the outdoor adventures waiting to be experienced, the authentic and funky small-town feel, diverse dining scene featuring James Beard-nominated restaurants, fun saloons, unique local lodging and friendly people are another huge draw.

“What truly sets Stanley apart, however, is its community,” Schoeben explained. “People return not just for the landscape, but for the character of the town itself.”
With minimal crowds, clear skies made for peaceful stargazing, and outdoor destinations that invite both relaxation and exploration, it’s the perfect escape for people looking for something new to add to their outdoor bucket list.
“Many visitors use Stanley as a hub for extended adventures, traveling through neighboring wilderness areas like Atlanta, Idaho and Grandjean, and spending days or weeks immersed in the backcountry,” Schoeben said. “Despite its small size, Stanley leaves a lasting impact.”
